Alarippu literally means the blossoming of a flower. It is an invocatory piece performed at the beginning of the recital, offering respects to the gods , Gurus and audience. It is a warm up for the entire performance. The movement of all major and minor limbs is involved.

In this kriti, Annamacharya worships Vasudeva , describing his appearance, ornaments , abode and his benevolent acts. He bows down to Vasudeva and worships his lotus feet .

Mathe Malayadwaja Pandya Samjate

​

“O Mother of the elephant faced one and Kartikeya and the daughter of the Pandya king Malayadhwaja.” This varnam describes Goddess Meenakshi of Madurai in various manifestations of Devi such as Shankari, Chamundeswari, Sakhodari, Gauri and above all as a mother. The varnam is preceded by verses from Abhirami Andathi, recited by the poet Abirama Pattar on Goddess Abhirami residing in Thirukkadaiyur.

This padam is one of the several in the musical opera Nandanar Charitram composed by Gopalakrishna Bharati. It deals with Nandanar’s visit to the Shivalokanathar temple at Thirupunkur. When he visits, he finds that there is a massive Nandi blocking his view of the lord. As an outcaste he cannot sidestep the bull and enter the temple. So he pleads to the lord to request Nandi to adjust his position a little bit so he can have his viewing without having to go in.

This is a Telugu lullaby composed by the great Prayaga Rangadasa in honour of his small daughter Suryakanthamma who would go on to become the mother of the legend Dr Balamuralikrishna. He had 2 daughters and he has made this rather mischievous composition to please his younger daughter. While he endearingly tells her that he will feed her and sing for her if she behaves, he also tells her about a monster which is scary, in case she does not behave.

This bhajan sings the praises of Sri Ram who destroys fear of this worldly existence. His eyes and face are like freshly bloomed lotuses. Similarly his hands and feet are also like lotuses. It then goes on to describe Lord Rama in all his grandeur.

This is a fast paced rhythmic piece with a verse on Lord Muruga. “O Rider of the peacock who came searching for a deer , ate some honey and married the deer like Valli! As for me, I languish thinking of you all day, why do you still neglect me?’
